Metro construction prompts temporary relocation of 77 Bowbazar residents

Seventy-seven residents of Bowbazar in Kolkata were temporarily relocated to hotels due to ongoing East-West Metro construction work. This precautionary measure was taken because the residents' homes were in the "influence zone" of the construction site, where significant structural work, including the building of an evacuation shaft, is underway. The Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC) arranged for their accommodation to ensure their safety during this critical phase of the project​. 

The East-West Metro project, aimed at connecting Howrah Maidan with Salt Lake Sector V, has faced multiple delays and incidents since its inception. In May 2022, construction work caused water leaks, resulting in building cracks and displacements in the Bowbazar area. The current work to bridge a gap at the construction site involved the evacuation of residents to prevent any further mishaps.
